Teacher assessment codes
Early Years Foundation Stage
Each child is given a level of 1 (emerging) or 2 (expected) in each of 17 early learning goals (ELG). The goals are grouped into areas of learning, such as communication and language and physical development. These areas of learning are then grouped into prime and specific areas.
A pupil is considered to have made a good level of development if they have been awarded level 2 (expected) in all of the prime areas of learning, as well as the literacy and mathematics goals (12 goals in total).

Phonics screening tests
There are no changes to the data being collected for phonics.
In summer, during the test week in June, every Year 1 pupil (as well as any Year 2 pupils who did not meet the expected standard in Year 1), will take part in the phonics test. In either check, the result is a simple score from 0 to 40 dependent on the number of correct answers they give.
Data items
Standard | Score | Outcome |
---|---|---|
Expected standard | 0 to 40 | Wa (working at the expected standard) |
Lower attaining | Wt (working toward the expected standard) | |
Other values | Not applicable |
A (Absent) D (Disapplied) L (Left) Q (Maladministration) |
A threshold score for determining pupils that are working at and towards the expected standard will be released by the DfE following the screening checks.
Key Stage 2 assessments
For writing, the target is for every child to be working at the Expected Standard (EXS) or at greater depth (GDS), but there are also categories for those working lower than the expected standard (WTS, PK1–PK6, EM).
For reading and maths, schools are no longer required to assess children who have been entered for the Key Stage 2 tests, the only categories that may be awarded are PK1–PK6 and EM.
