About statutory assessments
Overview
The end-of-year Key Stage Assessments are statutory for the current academic year (2022/23) and will need to be submitted during 2023's summer term.
Deadlines
These deadlines are the latest that schools can submit their data.
Where possible, please submit your data the week before, so that we can validate the data and check the data with you before submitting the final data to the DfE.
Please also allow extra time for potential import queries. In particular, the experience schools found with the Primary Assessment Gateway (PAG) in 2022.

Assessment types
Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP) - Reception
2022/23 will be the second year of the 'new' framework for EYFSP assessments. No changes to the framework are projected and it remains statutory for all schools.
Phonics - Year 1 (and 2)
There will be a single summer check for all Year 1 pupils. Additionally, any year 2 pupil failing to pass the check in June 2022 as a year 1 pupil must take the check again in June 2023 during the same window.
Key Stage 1 - Year 2
There will be tests in May 2023 that will be used within schools to inform teacher assessment judgements in reading, writing and maths.
Schools need to submit the teacher assessment judgements to us so that we can carry out quality assurance checks and submit the information to the Standards and Testing Agency (STA) and the DfE.
Pupils who are below the standard of the tests will continue to be assessed under the Engagement Model.
More information is available in the Government’s guidance on KS1 teacher assessments
Key Stage 2 - Year 6
SATs tests need to be returned directly to the DfE/STA for marking by the schools without coming to the LA.
Writing will be teacher-assessed and schools need to submit the results using the Primary Assessment Gateway (PAG). Experience in 2021/22 with Primary Assessment Gateway was extremely poor for schools and LA and this may / should result in some changes at least behind the scenes.
As with KS1, pupils who are below the standard of the tests now need to be assessed using the engagement mode instead of P scales.
More information is available in the Government’s guidance on KS2 teacher assessments.
