We know that many colleagues, including teachers and headteachers, greatly value the support that comes from moderation. Even though assessment at the end of Key Stage 1 is now non-statutory and schools will no longer be required to report on the performance of pupils to the DfE, we are keen to offer this support.
In Derby, we have decided to trial a new approach to moderation for Year 2. The focus will be on moderation of Writing, though there may also be an opportunity to moderate teacher assessment in maths and reading.
The Key Stage 1 Moderation events will be on Thursday 6th June. They will take place at Nightingale Hall, DLEV, Moor Lane Derby. School leaders should be aware of the date through HSLM and via assessment training events.
All schools are invited to attend for half a day. Schools may be contacted directly to recommend attendance if any of the following apply:
- The school has not been subject to moderation at KS1 since before 2019;
- There are new senior leaders with responsibility for KS1 in post;
- Staff are new to the year group or locality, including ECTs; and/or,
- The LA is aware of any other information that suggests moderation may be beneficial to the school.
Schools who are targeted for attendance will be contacted directly by Friday 17th May 2024, if they have not already booked places at one of these sessions.
Teachers should bring evidence of learning in Writing, Maths and Reading completed by pupils working at a range standards. (Approximately 10% of each cohort, with a mixture of WTS, EXS and GDS.)
Table discussions will explore the evidence in pupils’ work in relation to the Key Stage 1 Teacher Assessment Frameworks. These will be led by trained moderators who have successfully completed KS1 Standardisation Exercises in previous years and who have completed refresher training during 2023/24.
All colleagues around the table will focus on evidence demonstrates achievement against the ‘pupil can’ statements. Moderators will offer support and/or challenge as required. If necessary, tables will continue discussions about Writing after the break (even if this means discussions regarding Maths and Reading are limited).
To book your place, please email SpecialistSupport@derby.gov.uk. When making a booking schools must indicate the following:
