Furthest From the Sea Festival

Ahoy there!

We’re writing to tell you about TWO exciting opportunities for your school to get involved with Furthest from the Sea Music, Comedy & Arts (Derbyshire’s not-for-profit grassroots arts organisation) in the coming weeks and year ahead.

ONE: Take part in our Pirate Portrait art competition (download details).

This can be completed in the classroom, at an after-school club, or by the children individually at home. The flyer can be downloaded to be sent directly to parents. All entries to the competition will be displayed at the Furthest from the Sea Festival on Saturday 24th June 2023, on Cathedral Green outside the Museum of Making. Taking part in the competition will encourage children and their families to join us at Derby’s free pirate festival, funded by Arts Council England and supported by many local partners. The festival will offer opportunities for children and their families to participate in and experience a wide range of creative activities and performances.

Deadline for entries: Thursday 15th June

TWO: Apply to become an Associate School as part of Furthest from the Sea’s brand new initiative

Enjoy the benefits of connecting with us whilst meeting the objectives in the national curriculum. Together we will produce creative work, explore our ideas within the school and at outreach locations, inviting children, families, friends, teachers, and the wider school staff to connect in our local communities.

Associate Schools will enjoy many benefits, including:

  • A free half-day of artist time and materials, to be used to create a large-scale collaborative art piece to form part of a community display at the Furthest from the Sea Festival on June 24th. This could be with one class or year group, or could involve a larger number of children adding smaller contributions. This would need to be completed during the first three weeks of June.
  • Access to at least four additional substantially subsidised sessions with artists and creatives in the lead up to our festival and throughout the year.
  • Ongoing engagement with our team to support the development of classroom, extra-curricular and community focused creative strategies and activity.
  • An invitation to engage in the development of future funded projects

What we ask from our Associate Schools:

  • Enthusiasm to develop the creative opportunities for students, both in school and also in a wider community setting.
  • A named point of contact within school to ensure good communication.
  • A commitment to share information about our Pirate Portrait Competition, Festival and other relevant events with all children and their families.

Apply before June 6th by providing some simple details using this form. Capacity is limited, so don’t delay!

If you have any questions about either opportunity or would like to chat to one of our team, please email Marie (community@furthestfromthesea.co.uk) or call Eileen on 07761849411.
