Following a report released from the National Child Mortality Database (NCMD) last year a Child Death Overview Panels (CDOP) briefing note on drowning and water safety has been published.  One of the recommendations of the report is to raise awareness of water safety and amongst professionals and families, particularly in the run up to the summer months when drowning incidents increase.

Drownings that occurred inland (river/lakes) were most common, followed by drownings in the bath. In contrast, swimming pool drownings have decreased.

The main CDOP learning and recommendations were:

  • The importance of supervision of children.
  • The need for warning signs and lifesaving equipment around water.
  • The importance of water safety in the home and public places.

The article continues to state that drowning is highly preventable and guides professionals and families to relevant sources of advice via a series of webpage links.
