We’re excited to be offering ELKLAN training in the Summer Term - this remote-learning course for Teachers and/or TAs is a great way to skill up teaching staff in very practical ways to teach, support and adapt learning opportunities for children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs.

The course takes place over 11 weeks (term time) with a blended learning approach; some e-learning, some live webinars and some written work. Each learner has the opportunity to receive an accredited qualification similar to a Level 2 or 3 NVQ. If they achieve Level 3 they can then work to become a SLCN trainer in school and achieve ELKLAN Communication Friendly Status for your school!

We are planning to run either a 5-11s course, so suitable for primary-aged level. The dates are as follows, all on a Tuesday:

Meet & Greet: April 18 3.30pm
1. April 25: 3.30pm
2. May 2: 3.30pm
3. May 9: 3.30pm
4. May 16: 3.30pm
5. May 23: 3.30pm
6. June 13: 3.30pm
7. June 20: 3.30pm
8. June 27: 3.30pm
9. July 4: 3.30pm
10. July 11: 3.30pm

Cost: £399 per learner, including e-learning access and accreditation

Having one or more staff trained in ELKLAN is a brilliant way to maximise the benefits of whatever level of SALT support you receive in school, as staff will have the skills to identify children who may have SLCN, put strategies into place and have in-depth knowledge of how to implement SALT recommendations, programmes and required teaching strategies.

The course is structured as follows:

  • 1 X 30 minute introductory session for participants
  • 10 x 1 hour weekly e-learning, which participants watch independently in advance of the live session
  • 10 x 1 hour live weekly webinar (1 per week in term time), with the ELKALN Tutor who will answer questions about the e-learning and discuss the learning log tasks for that week
  • weekly independent completion of the learning log tasks with a child/children, which is then written up in the learning log. This is then marked by the Tutor and once the course and all tasks are completed to the required standard, accreditation is given.

Obviously, this is a short term but significant commitment, so it is important that the staff member(s) involved are aware of the course requirements.

Here’s what a couple of our recent learners had to say about it:

"My overall thinking and communication have changed towards my learners, for example I am more aware of my communication skills when I am interacting with my learners, adding short ideas, giving them thinking time and limit the number of questions I ask during our conversation."

"Keep doing what you are doing. You are providing vital pedagogical knowledge and support to educational practitioners and professionals alike!!"
