The Derby Promise aims to support every young person in the city to live their best life. Leaders from the public, private, and voluntary sectors are working together to provide meaningful opportunities for young people in Derby to access careers experiences, build skills, explore the future of work, and give them confidence to reach their full potential.

The Derby Promise presents a unique opportunity for students, school leaders, and communities to unite for climate action at The Festival of Ideas. These events will inspire and empower the next generation to tackle environmental challenges head-on and be part of the future green economy

The programme consists of three strands.

a) Experiential learning.

b) Curriculum engagement, in STEM, careers and the arts.

c) Supporting all schools to develop a climate action plan owned by students.

The launch of Derby Promise's Festival of Ideas aligns with the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference COP29, which runs from 11 to 22 November.  On 12 November schools are invited to a day of interactive activities and learning to support them in developing their climate change action plans.  The Festival of Ideas will provide ongoing support, activities, and experiences focused on the 4 themes within the action plans, with a celebration of learning taking place during Science Week in March 2025.

Key Workshops & Themes:

  • Decarbonisation: How can we reduce the amount of energy we use in our schools and homes?
  • Biodiversity: How can we encourage more nature in our city?
  • Green Careers: What do you want to do to help the environment now and when you leave school?
  • Adaptation & Resilience: How can Derby get ready for a warmer, wetter climate?
