Corporate Health and Safety
Running schools and academies is challenging for many reasons. We want to ensure that you are supported with the challenges of managing health and safety. The City Council’s Corporate Health and Safety Team is on-hand to work in partnership with you and your school to provide competent advice, guidance, support, and reassurance.
The Management of Health and Safety Regulations (1999) requires employers to have access to competent health and safety advice and support. Failure to do so could expose you, your school, colleagues and governors to potential enforcement action.
What our package includes
- Fulfil your duty to engage a competent person - you will be allocated a named H&S lead
- Provision of a telephone and email advisory service during business hours
- Specialised advice on complex safety related issues such, infection control, work at height and medication
- A health and safety management audit annually
- Follow up supportive visits, or targeted audits (two per year)
- Access to a suite of health and safety policies, procedures, and guidance through the Schools’ Information Portal (SIP)
- Support for schools when liaising with other regulators
- Health and safety consultation, on behalf of schools, with trade unions and employee representatives
- Regular health and safety updates via the Schools’ Circular.
Risk assessment
- Access to a suite of generic risk assessments available on the SIP
- Support and guidance in carrying out specific risk assessments
- Provision of risk assessment training – two free places
- Free Display Screen Equipment (DSE) assessments for up to four colleagues.
Accident/investigation support
- Access to a recording, reporting and advisory service relating to RIDDOR reports.
- Support and guidance when investigating reportable injuries and ill-health
- Access to two free places on the accident reporting and investigation course
- Specialist on-site support when dealing with HSE investigations.
Learning and development
- Access to a full suite of health and safety courses for Heads, Deputies, School Business Managers and/or Site Managers. Two free places per mandatory course
- Additional places can be bought for £60.00 per delegate (in package) please see the training brochure for more information
- Training places for schools who do not buy back our package £80 per delegate
- Access to a RoSPA approved suite of e-learning courses via SIP
- Advice and signposting to specialist training.
Additional services that can be purchased but not included in the package
eduFOCUS EVOLVE system
- This is an online system for the management f educational visits, sports fixtures, extra-curricular trips and activities with support from the team in reviewing and approving residential and adventurous trips
Radiation Protection Officer:
- Access to the Council’s Radiation Protection Officer service
Specialist training courses:
- Governor Training – health and safety roles and responsibilities
- Medication training for schools
- EVAC+™ Chair Operator training for up to four delegates per course
- Other training courses can be provided to meet your specific needs. For example, site safety training for caretaking staff
In school support:
- Specific audits such as a noise and vibration
- Out-of-hours consultancy where appropriate
- DSE assessments (five or more colleagues)

Cost
The price is an annual fee based on a price per employee at £19.00 within the following fixed price bands:

Band 3 | Over 101 to 199 employees in your school or academy | £2940 |

For schools who buy back the health and safety package the eduFOCUS EVOLVE system can be purchased separately for £250.00 per financial year.
For schools out of package the eduFOCUS EVOLVE system can be purchased for £325.00.
Radiation Protection Officer access: £100 per year.
Governor training – £60 per delegate for schools in package, £80 per delegate out of package.
Any additional H&S services will be charged at an hourly rate of £70. This cost will include travel time. Prices do not include VAT.
