Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
Personal, social and health education (PSHE) is a planned programme of learning opportunities and experiences that help children and young people to grow and develop as individuals, as members of families and of social and economic communities. Good quality PSHE education contributes to children and young people living healthier, safer lifestyles. This could include making informed choices around RSE (Relationships and Sex Education), alcohol, tobacco, drugs, money, employment and enterprise.
The Healthy Schools Programme plays a key role in helping schools to deliver good quality PSHE education. It does this by encouraging children and young people to make informed lifestyle choices and become healthily engaged and participating in their communities.

Drug Education
Drug Education in schools aims to reduce levels of substance misuse and the degree of associated harm. It includes drugs, alcohol and volatile substances (glues, gas and solvents). Education is one of the most effective ways of preventing drug and alcohol misuse. It aims to:
- Provide opportunities for pupils to develop their knowledge, skills, attitudes and understanding about things
- Provide accurate information about substances
- Increase understanding about the implications and possible consequences of use and misuse
- Widen understanding about related health and social issues, e.g. sex and sexuality, crime, HIV and aids.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
Relationship and sex education (RSE) in schools focuses first on relationships and the skills and values young people need as they progress through childhood and adolescence into adulthood. It includes a clear and explicit values framework of mutual respect, rights and responsibilities, gender quality and aspects of diversity. Most importantly, RSE is taught in an age appropriate way with lessons focused on children’s ages and stages of development. It aims to give children and young people the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to make informed, safe choices.

Teaching RSE in schools
At a Healthy Schools Network meeting on 20 January 2014 we had a forum with those who attended to look at issues on how to handle teaching RSE in schools. Everyone present shared ideas and suggestions they found helpful in teaching RSE.
Good Practice Stories
We are encouraging schools to share stories of Good Practice in any area of their Healthy Schools work to encourage other schools to share creative ideas towards excellent practice and for us all to celebrate their achievements. Please do submit stories to julia.mitton@derby.gov.uk and please include your school story when you have achieved a Healthy Schools Enhancement, Heart Mark or any other area of Healthy Schools work.
