At the Voices in Action Youth Council meeting in the Council Chamber on Monday 13 February, the results of the 2023/4 Youth Mayor Elections were announced by the Councillor Evonne Williams, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People and Skills.

The next Youth Mayor for 2023/4 will be Muhammad Muntasir from Noel Baker Academy and the Deputy Youth Mayor will be Harman Kaur from City of Derby Academy. They will both shadow our existing Youth Mayor and Deputy, Omar and Gloria, for the next 3 months until they are formally appointed to their roles at The Council’s Annual General Meeting in May 2023.

Lilly and Anna, the other candidates in the election, a huge well done, you both did extremely well, and the results were close. Don’t let this put you off applying again as was said in the meeting, many successful politicians did not win at their first attempt!

There were 10,845 votes cast with 18 schools in the city taking part, certainly a great achievement.

Our huge congratulations to Muhammad and Harman. We wish you both an extremely successful year in your roles. To Lilly and Anna very well done, you both did extremely well, and the results were close. Don’t let this put you off applying again as was said in the meeting, many successful politicians didn’t win at their first attempt!

All candidates throughout the process have been a credit to themselves, their families, and their schools. You can all be so proud of your achievements in being part of the Youth Mayor process. The presentations you gave and ideas you shared were inspiring to hear.

If any of your students would like to consider applying for the 2024/5 Youth Mayor Process, we will send out application forms to schools early July, prior to the summer break.

If any of your students are 16+ they can register to vote in local and national elections ready for when they turn 18 years old when they are able to vote. They can apply to register at www.gov.uk/registertovote (it only takes 5 minutes). More information about elections in the city are available at www.derby.gov.uk/elections . It would be useful if this could be shared with parents as registering to vote allows everyone to have a voice in upcoming elections. Being on the electoral register can also help improve credit scores when buying a car or thinking about a phone contract or a mortgage.

Youth Mayor Elections have taken place at Derby City Council since 2014. They are an important part of engaging with young people in Democracy and voting. I would like to thank all schools for making the time in school for this important process to take place. I realise that it is a really challenging time for you all and appreciate all you do to make this initiative the clear success that it is.

If students would like to join the Voices in Action Youth Council (ViA) they can get involved by contacting Adele Styles on via@derby.gov.uk.

Thank you for your continued support, it is really appreciated.
