Derby Book Festival - Flash Fiction Writing Competition

Derby Book Festival - Flash Fiction Writing Competition

Each year we choose a different theme – one that can be broadly interpreted – and ask you to write an original story of up to 50 words. This year’s theme is ‘Light’, and we hope it offers many ways for you to interpret it.

For example, you could focus on the light that is all around us and the way it changes throughout the day, the feeling of being light or the weight of an object, or the action of creating light – lighting a fire or candle. It’s up to you how you interpret the theme.

There are three age categories; 11 years and under, 12-17, and 18 and over. This year, we are asking the 11 and under category to write a poem of up to 50 words.

There will be one winner in each category and each winner will receive the following prizes:

  • A £50 book token
  • It will be illustrated by an illustration student from the University of Derby in a competition for second-year students
  • The story and illustration will be printed on a Festival bookmark, which will be used to promote our next Festivals
  • It will be published on our website.

It’s free to enter and you can enter as many times as you’d like. To make things easier this year, we are encouraging all teachers to submit multiple entries by email as a file (e.g., Excel) containing all the stories from your class or school. Please email it to: hello@derbybookfestival.co.uk by the closing date, which is 9pm on February 15th.
