Derby Book Festival is launching the annual Fifty Word Flash Fiction writing competition on 4 January 2023 when the theme will be announced.

There are three age categories: 11 years and under, 12 – 17 years and 18 years and above.

The winners of each category will receive a £50 book token and the winning stories will be published on Festival bookmarks with an illustration of each story by a University of Derby Illustration student.

The closing date for the competition is 10pm on Wednesday 15 February 2023.

For the 2023 competition for the 11 years and under, we would like you to write a poem of up to 50 words.

We are keen to encourage children to write poetry and are delighted that, as part of our community programme for schools, the Children’s Laureate, poet and author Joseph Coelho, will join us for ourMeet the Author event for primary schools (Years 2, 3 & 4) at Derby Theatre. All Derby City schools will be invited to send a group of children to meet him, plus the event will be live streamed so pupils can watch it in their schools. We will send full details and a booking form to schools in the spring term.

Teachers please note: this year you can submit multiple story entries by email. Simply upload them to a single file containing all the stories from your class/school.Please email it to hello@derbybookfestival.co.uk by the closing date.
