Pirates Against Plastic! – Poster Competition

The Furthest from the Sea Festival returns to Derby on Saturday 17th July. This free, family event will bring pirates galore to Cathedral Green (outside the new Museum of Making), and between 10am and 4pm a programme of performances and workshops led by some of the best of Derby and Derbyshire’s amazing artists will provide plenty of opportunities to get creative and have fun.

As part of the Festival, children are invited to design an A4 poster, supporting our pirates in their campaign against plastic pollution… ‘Pirates Against Plastic’. This activity aims to raise the profile of the challenges of plastic pollution (especially in waterways and the ocean) in a fun way, and introduce the idea that art can be used as a tool for campaigning for change.

Schools are invited to prepare posters in class, as a homework challenge, or as part of an extra-curricular club or activity. Individual entries are also welcome, so schools could also pass on the details of the competition and encourage children to take part in their own time. All entries will be displayed as part of the festival on Saturday 17th July. The competition closing date is MONDAY 5th JULY.

We are excited that University of Derby Alumni and established children’s author-illustrator Pippa Curnick has agreed to judge the competition. Pippa has illustrated many picture books as well as older fiction, including ‘The Boy At The Back Of The Class’ and the recent editions of Mallory Towers. As author-illustrator she has just launched a brand-new illustrated fiction series based on the colourful character, Indigo Wilde. Prizes will be awarded to individuals at the Festival, with winners having the opportunity to meet Pippa and chat with her. For the first year we are offering a prize for the school with the best overall contribution – this will be in the form of a visit/workshop led by Pippa, to be arranged for the autumn term.
